H1 auto sales: Toyota, Mitsubishi continue to pace field as race for 3rd tightens

Top 5 sales drivers in the Philippine automotive industry for first half of 2021

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) and Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) continued to lead local auto sales at the end 2021's first half, while Suzuki Philippines (SPH) and Ford Philippines engaged in a neck-and-neck rivalry for third place.

TMP led by a wide margin anew as it rolled out 63,758 units to buyers. MMPC’s 19,858 vehicles sold helped it get second place, while Suzuki finished in third spot with 9,987 vehicles for the first six months of the year.

SPH is within striking distance of the local distributor for the Blue Oval brand as it sold  9,855 units during the full six months of the year.

Just last May, it was Ford that was on top of Suzuki with the former delivering 8,239 units to customers, as against the latter’s 8,192 units.

Meanwhile, the rest of the top 10 for the whole automotive industry in the country remained intact with Nissan Philippines still holding fifth place with 9,047 units sold and sustaining its distance from Isuzu Philippines Corporation’s 6,735 sales.

Top 6-10 sales drivers in the Philippine automotive industry for first half of 2021

Honda Cars Philippines Inc. (HCPI), which was in sixth place back in the first quarter of this year, slid down a notch with 6,307 units. The Japanese carmaker needs to boost its sales further as Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc.— based on the figures submitted to the Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors, Inc. (AVID) — is just 144 units short.

Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) — the local distributor for Geely since 2019 — is the only Chinese automotive manufacturer in the top 10 with 2,372 units sold for January-June 2021.

The Ayala-backed KP Motors Corporation, which handles the Kia distributorship locally, rounded up the 10 best-selling automotive brands in the Philippines for the first half with 1,801 units.

Hino Motors Philippines and Foton Motor Philippines are in 11th and 12th places, selling 1,307 and 1,222 units, respectively.
