Laps of luxury: Similar alternatives to the Hyundai Palisade

Consumers admire the SUV's heft and functionality, but the Hyundai Palisade adds to those qualities a sprinkling of style and luxury.

Launched at the 2019 Manila International Auto Show, the Palisade showed its slim daytime running lights, vertical headlights, and large chrome grille. Out  back, the L-shaped taillights complement the design cues up front. With such a striking design, the SUV won the iF Design Award 2019

Powering the Palisade is a 198hp 2.2-liter CRDi engine paired with an eight-speed computerized transmission controlled by paddle shifters. The SUV is underpinned by an electronic HTRAC all-wheel drive and multi-terrain control system.

Inside, the luxury accoutrements include a 10.25-inch audio display, a three-zone automatic temperature control, heated/ventilated power seats lined in leather, voice recognition, and wireless charging.

For all the chrome and leather trimmings, the seven-seater Palisade goes for P3.24 million, which places this Hyundai next to other luxe and large SUVs.

Hyundai Santa Fe ( P2.158 - P2.538 million)

An alternative to the Palisade could be its little brother the Santa Fe. It's positioned to be a more upscale offering against mainstream midsize SUVs, so it packs similar features to the Palisade.

For one, it has the signature Hyundai grille, LED lights front and back, and the chrome details.

Inside, the Santa Fe has leather seats for seven, power front seats, and a three-spoke steering wheel with audio/phone controls. Taking center stage is the seven-inch infotainment system with Apple Carplay or Android Auto.

The driver is fronted by a seven-inch LCD instrument cluster, and can use an electronic parking brake.

Ford Explorer (P2.798-P3.178 million)

The Explorer, just like the Palisade, was made with the US market in mind. And although long in the tooth, the Explorer has gadgets to get into the present. It has Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, linking to a premium Sony sound system with 12 speakers.

Other Explorer toys include  include powered front seats, rear seat entertainment, a dual panel moonroof, 180-degree camera, and the nifty terrain management system (TMS).

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (P3.369 - P4.17 million)

It's also one of the oldest luxury and pricey Palisade alternatives. However, what can be had in return is the Land Cruiser's legendary reliability and virtually unbeatable off-road prowess.

The Land Cruiser Prado offers a choice of a 2.8-liter DOHC turbocharged diesel engine (201hp, 500Nm), and a 4.0-liter gasoline DOHC with Dual VVT-i (271hp, 381Nm).

As the seven passengers of the Toyota are taken through rough terrain, they will be coddled by leather seats, multiple accessory power outlets, dual auto climate control, and a six-speaker audio.

Subaru Evoltis (P3.480 million)

This Subaru goes by the name Ascent in the US, which makes it the Palisade's fellow American in the local market. The Evoltis is also considerably pricier than the Hyundai, but there are promos available for the model this June.

Powering the all-new Evoltis is the latest-generation FA24, 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine paired to a lineatronic continuous variable transmission. The powertrain pair allows the vehicle to reach 260hp and 375Nm torque.

Inside, the Subaru has a 14-speaker, 792-watt Harman Kardon sound system, a 54-inch panoramic sunroof, three-zone automatic climate control, multiple USB ports, power outlets, and 19 bottle holders located around the cabin.
