Touching contaminated items and surfaces is one of the ways the COVID-19 virus is able to deal its deadly strike.

So, it goes without saying that the lesser the potential for contact, the lower the risk that the disease will spread.

PayMaya, an e-wallet mobile app that allows for cashless payment transactions, understands that its service can go a long way in keeping contact to a minimum.

The company is now available to public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators, providing their passengers with either a virtual or physical cards that the latter can use to pay for fares.

Both the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) expressed their appreciation and support for PayMaya’s entry into this particular mass transit niche.

“The public's health and safety remain the topmost priorities of the DOTr. Ngayon, at higit kailanman, mas kinakailangan nating pangalagaan ang kapakanan, hindi lamang ng ating mga PUV drivers, kundi maging ng ating mga pasahero,” said DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Mark De Leon.

The availability of PayMaya’s cashless payment service in the PUV sector follows the Memorandum Circular 2020-018 of the DOTr-LTFRB ordering taxi and Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) operators in areas under a general community quarantine (GCQ) to give their passengers cashless or digital payment options in order to help contain the spread of COVID-19.

“We have to end this pandemic. One of the ways to end this is to limit direct human contact to stop transmission of COVID-19," De Leon added.

In accordance with the Memorandum Circular, PayMaya is offering taxi and transport network companies, as well as their drivers, its QR scan-to-pay (STP) capabilities via its mobile app. This will prompt access to a digital financial account that they can use for transactions such as bills payments, airtime load reloading, and sending money to friends and family.

Further, drivers and transport operators may also receive contactless payments through credit, debit, and prepaid cards via tap-to-pay technology through the digital payment solutions of PayMaya.

Transport operators may also use PayMaya’s PayOut disbursement solution for the easy distribution of salaries and other incentives to their drivers’ respective PayMaya accounts.

“Cashless payment, particularly in taxis and TNVS, is part of the 'new normal', and we are glad that our drivers and operators have easy and convenient options such as PayMaya, so that they can quickly implement this solution for the safety and benefit of their riders,” said LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III.
