Toyota is looking at building a next-generation arena through its “Tokyo A-Arena Project.” According to the Japanese carmaker, the Tokyo A-Arena Project is intended to become a place integrating and unleashing a wide range of potentialities, particularly in the areas of sports, mobility, and sustainability, with cooperation from various partners.

According to Toyota, Alvark Tokyo will use the Tokyo A-Arena Project as its home court.
  • A recent press release from Toyota reveals that the Tokyo A-Arena Project will be built at Koto-ku, Tokyo. It will sit on a 27,000-square-meter (sqm) area and can accommodate approximately 10,000 persons. It will be built in cooperation with Toyota Fudosan Co., Ltd. and will be operated by Toyota Alvark Tokyo Corporation.

    Alvark Tokyo

The Aichi-based automotive brand reveals that Alvark Tokyo, a Toyota-sponsored professional basketball team and a member of the B. League First Division, will use the new arena as its home court. Aside from hosting basketball events, the facility will also stage indoor sports such as volleyball and table tennis, urban sports, parasports, e-sports, and more to widely share the appeal of sports.

In addition, Toyota plans to use its mobility services in the Tokyo A-Arena Project. Although the company did not mention what these mobility services are, we think that it has something to do with Toyota’s three-wheeled battery electric vehicle released last year in Japan.

Toyota adds that it plans to collaborate with various companies in adopting their services and technologies to make the arena experience more convenient and fun.

Furthermore, the Tokyo A-Arena Project will be rooted in sustainability. It will have two outdoor parks to contribute to community vitality. Toyota also mentioned that it is looking to have the Tokyo A-Arena Project Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified — a first for any Japanese arena.

“This new arena project incorporates two ideas of ours. The first is to show ‘gratitude to sports and athletes.’ The second is to give ‘continued support to people who push their potential.’ This arena will become the new home of Alvark Tokyo, Toyota's basketball team, but we hope it will also become sacred ground for all kinds of other competitions. We hope that it will also provide power to parasports and competitions with a low number of competitors, low recognition, and few supporters,” said Toyota President and Toyota Fudosan Chairman Akio Toyoda.

“I am confident that when people can see, first-hand and close-up, competition with athletes they have never seen before, seeking to set new records never before achieved by humankind and opening up new potentialities, and actually succeeding in that, many people ― including us ― will feel encouragement and joy,” the Toyota boss added.
