BUYER'S GUIDE: 2018 Honda BR-V

Seven-seater vehicles are like a blockbuster movie hit in the Philippine market. With its competitive pricing, functionality, and versatility, Filipinos easily fell in love with it. This love affair isn’t a surprise because Pinoys like to travel in groups and have close family ties. The demand for seven-seater cars pushed local manufacturers to offer their respective challengers. One such vehicles is the Honda BR-V, a seven-seater crossover that has attracted a number of Filipino buyers. What does it have to offer? Here’s a rundown of the BR-V’s notable features.

Specification

The BR-V is available in four variants: the 1.5 S CVT, the 1.5 V Navi CVT, the 1.5 S CVT Modulo, andthe 1.5 V Navi CVT Modulo. The Modulo variants are distinguished from the regular BR-Vs through the sporty body kits fitted to the vehicle. Yes, Modulo variants are essentially the same with the regular BR-Vs sans the sporty body kits. All four variants are equipped with a 1.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC gasoline engine that delivers 118 hp and 145 Nm of torque. The engine is connected to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Honda i-VTEC gasoline engine If you're into numbers, the BR-V S CVT measures 4,453 mm long while the V Navi CVT is at 4,456 mm. All variants have similar width, height, and wheelbase--1,735 mm, 1,665 mm, and 2,662 mm, respectively. In addition, the BR-V has a ground clearance of 201 mm, which would give you peace of mind when you need to drive through unpaved roads.

Exterior

Like what we said in our BR-V car review, the exterior of this vehicle is like a Mobilio on steroids. It has more muscle, sharper character lines, and a more composed stance, as compared to the Mobilio. The top-of-the-line variant of the BR-V is fitted with LED headlights, fog lights, and chrome-plated door handles. It also comes with a bumper skid garnish (front and rear). Aside from the said design features, both BR-Vs looks similar.

Interior

The BR-Vs interior features a black theme along with splashes of silver accents. The layout is decent, simple, and straightforward. The base variant of the BR-V has all the essential features, which will make you think that it's not an entry level variant. It has a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity--not bad for a base variant. The top variant, on the other hand, features touchscreen infotainment with Navigation feature--this is one of the things that separates this variant from the base model. But, there's a high chance that you have Waze installed in your phone, which sort of reduce the importance of BR-V’s Navigation feature. Honda BR-V Seating The BR-V comes with a 2+3+2 seat configuration. The base model comes with fabric seats while the top variant has leather. The seat material could be the deciding factor when you're considering to buy the BR-V--would you go for fabric or leather? If money or budget is not a problem to you then go for leather seats. The second-row seats are sliding and reclining featuring a 60:40 split. Ingress and egress from the third-row is not a problem due to the BR-V's one-touch, fold-to-tumble second-row seats.

Space

The BR-V’s cargo space is rated at 223 liters. This number increases to 470 liters when you fold the third-row seats. That’s enough space to fit balikbayan boxes, coolers, water containers, among others. In terms of seating, three average-sized Filipino adults can easily fit in the second row. However, the third-row seat could be a bit of problem as head-, leg-, and elbow-room are quite tight. It can still fit two adults, but the ride may not be that comfortable.

Safety

Safety-wise, the BR-V is packed with all the essential features. It has driver and front passenger airbags, anti-lock brake system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), vehicle stability assist (VSA), and hill start assist (HAS). Yes, both variants of the BR-V are equipped with the said safety features. Moreover, the BR-V has child seat anchor (ISOFIX)--so yes, it's baby-friendly. Honda BR-V Exterior

Our Verdict

The Honda BR-V has the following price tags: 1.5 S CVT--PHP1.03 million; 1.5 S CVT Modulo--PHP1.072 million; 1.5 V Navi CVT--PHP1.149 million; and 1.5 V Navi CVT Modulo--PHP1.210 million. The Honda BR-V is an ideal choice if you're looking for a daily car and a road trip vehicle that can seat up to seven occupants. It's also an ideal family car, considering its seating capacity and safety features. No wonder, the BR-V managed to attract a lot of Filipino car buyers.
