BUYER'S GUIDE: 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe has become one of the strongest sellers for Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) in the country. January 2018 sales saw the model's sales numbers jump by 279 percent compared to the year before, and the unit continues to sell well as the year goes by. Check out specific details about the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe below to discover if it's the SUV you’re looking for.

Specification

As the largest SUV in Hyundai’s lineup, the front-wheel drive Hyundai Santa Fe boasts a lengthy 2,700 mm wheelbase, and overall dimensions of 4,700 mm x 1,880 mm x 1,690 mm. With only one variant available to the Philippine market, the main engine for the 2018 Santa Fe is a 2.2-liter, 197 hp, common rail direct injection (CRDi) diesel engine with variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) and a six-speed H-Matic transmission. Max torque is at 441 Nm, gross vehicle weight is at 2,510 kg, and ground clearance is at 185 mm. It's got 18-inch alloy wheels, and a full-size alloy spare wheel and tire is included for good measure.

Interior

The 2018 Santa Fe's electronic and power features have been made more adaptive to meet current needs. The goodies start with the steering wheel controls that now let you operate the car's Cruise Control, Audio, and Cluster Menu functions while keeping your hands where they should be. The driver's seat also comes with an electric two-way lumber support function, allowing for more comfortable rides in long trips and bogged-down traffic. Power features include windows, door locks, side mirrors, and a nifty electric fuel filler switch.

Exterior

The look is essentially the same as the 2017 version, but even so, smart design cues permeate all around. Chrome trims offer a nice complement to the overall exterior design, completely lining the grille and side windows, while partially lining the headlights and foglamps. Chrome can also be found on the outside door handles and side repeaters, which are electric-folding. Headlamps are projector type, while the taillamps are equipped with LED bulbs. Buyers have six colors to choose from, which include Ocean View, Phantom Black, Red Merlot, Tan Brown, Titanium Silver, and Vanilla White.

Safety

The usual suite of passive and active safety features are present here as they were in the previous Santa Fe, including Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Keyless Entry with Alarm, Dual Airbag System, and standard seatbelts. The rear spoiler comes with a high mount stop lamp for better visibility to the cars coming from behind. A puddle lamp allows boarding and alighting passengers to see and avoid any mud, standing water, and other adverse conditions on the ground right beneath the stepboard.

Our Verdict

Hyundai is one of the few carmakers to offer a five-year warranty on their cars, and that alone is a good enough reason to settle for any car in the South Korean brand's lineup. Fortunately, that's not the only positive that the Santa Fe has to offer. Aside from the improved look, the updated cabin, there's plenty of storage options onboard, and it's more electronically convenient than ever. Moreover, the vehicle is quiet and easy to drive. All-in-all, this Hyundai SUV is a winner, and belongs on your shortlist of SUVs to buy.
