BUYER'S GUIDE: 2019 Honda Brio

Honda Cars Philippines (HCPI) unveiled the latest version of the Honda Brio hatchback late last April. The first of the hatchback's second generation, the 2019 Honda Brio is largely based on the Small RS Concept that went on display at the 2018 Philippine International Motor Show. Right from the get-go, this new Brio seeks to build up on the good things that the small city car is known for, while also improving on its shortcomings. Check out what the car has to offer in this 2019 Honda Brio Buyer's Guide.

Specification

At the heart of the new Brio is Honda's advanced 1.2-liter, four-cylinder, i-VTEC engine with Programmed Fuel Injection, which delivers 89 hp and 109 Nm. Transmission choices fall between a manual and Honda's Earth Dreams continuously variable transmission (CVT). There are four trims to choose from--S MT, V CVT, RS CVT, and the range-topping RS Black Top CVT variant. The latter two boast a retuned suspension and sportier driving experience.

Exterior

With regards to the changes from the previous version, the new Brio has an edgier front fascia, thanks to a more pronounced version of Honda's 'Solid Wing Face' design language. This combines with the finer character lines that begin from the sporty headlights and rise up toward the back, exuding an elegant tapering chamfered look. The signature diagonal creases on the side doors carry over, albeit with a little tweak done, especially to the rocker panel. But the biggest change can be found in the rear, where the design takes a more vertical approach and gives the new Brio a longer, wider stance than its predecessor. All these changes to the Brio exterior ensure that the new Brio is one of the most stylish options you can find in the A-segment.

As the unique-looking of the bunch, the RS variant is characterized by a bigger spoiler, more aggressive body kit, and gloss black front grille with RS emblem. Brio buyers have five color options to choose from: Carnival Yellow, Modern Steel Metallic, Phoenix Orange Pearl, Taffeta White, and Rallye Red.

Interior

The cabin of the new Brio is intended to mirror the Honda Jazz, and so there are plenty of design similarities to be found within the two cars. The circular AC vents of old has been replaced with rectangular ones, signifying the Brio's sleeker turn. The instrument panel also has a more streamlined look this time around, with the meters now arranged in one neat row compared to the old one's three-dimensional appearance.

For infotainment, the low-end variant gets an advanced 1DIN integrated audio system, while the high-end variants house a seven-inch capacitive touchscreen operated audio system with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.

Space

The design changes that can be observed at the rear do more than just enhance the Brio's looks, they also make the cabin and cargo area more spacious. The added space gives rear seat passengers more legroom, and adds an enviable 90 mm to the cargo hold. Speaking of cargo space, the new Brio can hold 258 liters, which extends to 710 liters when the rear seats are folded down.

Safety

The Brio's body has been infused with Honda's G-Con technology, helping the car with impact absorption during a collision for the better protection of vehicle occupants. The Brio also has driver and front passenger airbags, anti-lock brake system with electronic brake distribution, engine immobilizer, speed-sensing door locks, and burglar alarm. All these help the 2019 Honda Brio score a four-star safety rating from the ASEAN NCAP, which is respectable for car of this size.

Our Verdict

With its price ranging from PHP585,000 to PHP732,000, the Honda Brio is a city car that suits a wide range of budgets. Its combination of upscale safety, space, and comfort is what makes it a great buy. Make sure to include the 2019 Honda Brio in your shortlist if 'you’re looking for an affordable everyday family car.
