Toyota makes good on its promise of unveiling the GR GT3 concept and the fully tuned GRMN Yaris at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS). Previously, Toyota shared teaser photos of the Batmobile-esque GR GT3 concept and a GR Yaris on 'roids. Needless to say, those anticipating the big reveal — us included — were pleased to finally see both concept cars.
The Japanese carmaker is not too generous when it comes to providing information about the GR GT3 concept. And although we think that it does look like a souped-up Supra, word on the web says that the recently unveiled GT3 car does not resemble any of Toyota’s existing production units and could hint that a small number of similarly designed performance models are in the pipeline.
With Toyota stating that it will continue “commercializing motorsports cars rather than simply adapting production vehicles for use in motorsports,” as with the case with the rally-bred Yaris, there could be a good chance that homologated GR GT3 could actually be a reality.
Toyota Gazoo Racing (TRG), the Japanese automaker’s motorsports and performance sub-brand, intends to use feedback and technologies refined through participation in various motorsports activities to develop both GT3 and mass-production cars.
Speaking of development, Toyota says that the development of the GRMN Yaris began with the desire of “Morizo” — the name used by Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda when he’s sitting behind the steering wheel — to “deliver cars to customers that evolve quickly and can be tailored to individuals like in the field of motorsports.”
According to Toyota, the GRMN Yaris will come in two packages: Circuit and Rally.
The former comes with BBS GRMN dedicated 18-inch wheels, 18-inch brakes, Bilstein shock absorber with adjustable damping force, a carbon (twill weave CFRP) rear spoiler, side skirts, and a lip spoiler.
The latter, on the other hand, comes with a GR shock absorber and short stabilizer link set, a GR under guard set, and a GR roll bar (with side bar).
Sales of a 500-unit limited edition model are expected to begin at GR Garages nationwide around summer (from June to September) 2022.
In addition to having refined the vehicle together with professional drivers as a fully tuned model of the GR Yaris, a new program that will deliver the type of daily vehicle evolution and driver-tailored customization that takes place in motorsports to customers is to soon be activated.
Toyota also showcased the bZ4X GR Sport concept at TAS 2022. Based on the bZ4X dedicated battery EV, the bZ4X GR Sport concept features large-diameter tires, sports seats, and matte black exterior body panels.
Several heritage parts, through the GR Heritage Parts Project, were also on display during the Japanese auto show with a selection of reproduced parts for the A70 Supra, A80 Supra, Toyota 2000GT, Land Cruiser 40 series, and AE86 Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno.
