BUYER'S GUIDE: Mazda 2 Hatchback

It has been called many names: Mazda Demio, Mazda Metro, Ford Festiva Mini Wagon, or Mazda 121. But we like to make things simpler by just calling it Mazda 2.

This B-Segment small hatch may not win accolades for its size; but rest assured it will compensate in other ways-- like winning the World Car of the Year in 2008 and snagging the Japanese Car of the Year in 2014-2015.

Here are some things you should know about the Mazda 2 hatchback:

Exterior

Personally, we think the hatchback version is more attractive than the sedan because we can see more traces of Mazda's award-winning KODO--Soul of Motion concept in action. One look at its exterior and you can see there's a balance of curves and intricate edges that make it one attractively sexy vehicle.

Interior

Get inside the Mazda 2 and you'll find heaps of fabric everywhere, with the exception of the leather shift knob and parking lever knob. It's not cheap-looking, though, but we wish there were more leather or chrome trims to add a more elegant ambiance inside.

It offers a seven-inch MZD Connect with CD/MP3/AUX/USB/Bluetooth infotainment system that helps you access your music, apps, and social media all with just a single touchscreen. There's also a voice command for menu switching, a navigation system,  plus Bluetooth and Audio Controls on the steering wheel.

Comfort and Convenience

We're fan of the seats. They're very comfortable, and can support you even during those long, back-breaking rides to hell.

Note, however, that space can be inadequate, especially in the rear portion of the vehicle. If you're on the tall side, then prepare for a cramped and uncomfortable ride at the back. And heaven forbid if the road has deep potholes. The least you can do is bring an ice pack for those bumps on your head after the long drive is over.

Fuel Efficiency

Here's one thing you'd like about the Mazda 2: It's very fuel-efficient. Its sedan sibling raked in an average 22.82 km/per liter during the 13th Department of Energy Fuel Economy Run last November 2017.

Safety

Safety is another plus for this hatchback. It comes with ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) with EBD ( Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Rear Parking Sensors, High-mount Stop Lamp, Rear View Camera, and Immobilizer.

Engine and Specifications

The Mazda 2 uses a SKYACTIV-G In-line 4-Cylinder DOHC, 16 Valve engine. It can churn out 107 hp and 139 Nm of torque. It offers a spirited drive, especially when you use the Sport Mode option.

Now, here's something worth noting: its G-Vectoring Control senses the driver's steering and calculates the best engine torque that the engine should use, which then controls the vertical load on each wheel. This increases handling stability and riding comfort.

Our Verdict

The Mazda 2 is NOT the ideal car for you if you need a lot of space. However, if what you need is a vehicle that looks good, performs well for average commutes, offers good safety features and excellent fuel efficiency, then the Mazda 2 is the right vehicle for you. That's certainly worth its price tag of PHP965,000.
