Minibuses and vans in the Philippines
Vans and minibuses are mass commercial vehicles that can carry more people than cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Vans can carry between 9 and 21 passengers, depending on their seating configuration and minibuses can carry more than 20.
In the Philippines, they are popularly used as non-metered forms of mass transport with most vans acting as commercial vehicles. These vehicles travel a limited, mostly round-about route. The UV Express, a wide network transport franchise that operates mostly in Metro Manila and other major cities uses the Nissan Urvan and Toyota HiAce as their company’s taxicab units.
Vans have one of the most configured and versatile vehicle models in the automotive industry. As they have an interior space and a wide body, they are used for a number of purposes including ambulances, delivery vehicles and small business vehicles for companies like electrical repair services.
Some vans are also upscaled with interior features and amenities to cater to high profile customers such as celebrities. One such vehicle is the Hyundai Grand Starex Limousine.
Meanwhile, some companies use minibuses which serve as shuttle buses to transport their employees to and from work, or to transport their visitors to their business complexes.
Increasing need for commercial vehicles
Vans and minibuses are categorized in the commercial vehicle division. The Philippines, as one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, has an increased demand for commercial vehicles to help transport people and products.
Price range of these vehicles
According to Carmudi’s listings, some of the cheapest second hand vans cost less than P150,000, such as the Haima Fstar 2010. A brand new Hyundai Starex, one of the best selling vans in the country, has a price tag of P1,283,000 for its entry-level unit.
Prices of minibuses usually costs more than P1.5 million depending on size, engine, interior amenities, and general condition. A used Hyundai Aero Space 2011 minibus, for example, is valued at P1,700,000.
