Roadster cars in the Philippines
Roadster cars are motorized vehicles which have two to four seats and have an open roof without side weather protection. Car manufacturers emphasize the sporty handling and speed. Some roadsters also feature retractable hardtops or soft tops to provide passengers some protection from the sunlight and rain.
Some roadsters or “hot rods” have rear seats or a rumble seat that can accommodate an additional one to two passengers. The first car that was mass produced, the Ford T-model, is considered a roadster.
Roadsters: An expensive choice
Because of their classic look and design, and the rarity of these vehicles, roadsters are known to be one of the most expensive car types in the auto industry. Some manufacturers have stuck to the two-seater, open roof design of the first original roadster. Other manufacturers have opted to include windows and an additional row of seats to satisfy market demands.
Roadsters, which have a retractable roof made usually of light materials are called convertibles as they can be transformed from an open roof car to a closed roof vehicle with the click of a button. Some examples of these cars are the BMW Z4 and the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
While today’s roadsters are often seen as a road accessory for men and women alike, there was a time when roadsters were also used in racing. The Roadster engine, which is placed on the centerline of the car along with its drive shaft, allows a weight offset in the car so the driver can sit lower in the chassis. This setup is advantageous on an oval race tracks such as the Indianapolis 500 where the vehicle got its “hot rod” moniker.
The roadster saw action on the Indianapolis 500 track in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. However, by the end of the 1960’s the front-engine roadster retired due to the introduction of rear-engined racing vehicles.
Top sports roadsters
Some of the best designed vehicles on the market are sports roadsters which combine a sportier design with the conventional roadster layout. Aside from the BMW Z4 other top sports roadsters include the Nissan 370Z, Mercedes Benz SLK and Porsche Boxster.
