The Mercedes-Benz 190E is a variant under Mercedes-Benz’s 190 model series which earned the moniker ‘baby Benz’ because it was the brand’s first small car. What made this little classic special was its engines, which were made by Cosworth Technology Ltd. From 1984 to 1993, the Mercedes-Benz 190E Cosworth had several models with specific engines. Years 1984 to 1988 saw the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16, which had the 2.3-liter ECE, RUF, and KAT engines in its hood. 1988 to 1993, on the other hand, witnessed the birth of the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16, Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 EVO I, and Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 EVO II which all had the same 2.5-liter engine but with different engine specs.

Mercedes-Benz 190E Review in the Philippines

Mercedes-Benz 190E Specs and Performance

The Mercedes-Benz 190E had many engines in its heart throughout its production years. The years from 1984 to 1988 saw different 2.3-liter engines with a 16-valve cylinder head and mechanical valve lifters. The model with this gasoline engine was called Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 because of that. Also, this 2.3-16 had ECE engine and was able to deliver a maximum output of 185 bhp at 6,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 235 Nm at 4,500 rpm. When 1986 came, they came up with another engine called the KAT engine with a catalytic converter. This engine was able to provide a maximum output of 170 bhp at 5,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 220 Nm at 4,750 rpm.

An engine called RUF engine, on the other hand, also became available with a maximum output of 177 bhp at 5,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 230 Nm at 4,750 rpm. The years 1988 to 1993 witnessed the birth of the new 190E, or rather, the 2.3-liter engine’s replacement. Called the 190E 2.5-16, it had a 2.5-liter engine with the same valves as the predecessor. Aside from displacement, the new model removed the ECE engine from the choices and only had the RUF and KAT engines. The RUF engine was able to provide a maximum output of 204 bhp at 6,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 240 Nm at 5,000 rpm, while the KAT version gave a maximum output of 194 bhp at 6,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 235 Nm at 5,000 rpm. In between the generation of the new 190E 2.5-16, a new and faster version called 190E 2.5-16 Evolution I (EVO I) was introduced in 1989. There was no difference in terms of output and torque compared to the standard 2.5-16, however, the EVO I was different in engine capacity, bore, and stroke. The capacity of the EVO I was 35 cc lower than the standard and the maximum revs were rated at 7250 per minute, which was 250/min higher. The EVO I didn’t last on the center stage, though, as another model stole the spotlight – the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II in 1990. It had a maximum output of 235 bhp at 7,200 rpm, a maximum torque of 245 Nm at 5,000 rpm, and maximum revs of  7700/min.

All engines were linked to either a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission and were powered by a rear-wheel drive. The brake systems, on the other hand, were improved as new models were introduced. The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 models all had a 284mm vented disk brakes for the front and 258mm disk brakes for the rear, while the EVO I and EVO II had 300mm vented disk brakes for the front and 278mm disk brakes for the rear.
